Sprags, or internal locking elements, lock to impart torque in one direction while allowing free rotation in the other. Use them in pick-and-place and automated indexing conveyor systems, as well as other situations requiring precise movement. Contaminants and dust are kept out by shields.
Although they don't keep out as much dust, shielded bearings are better at dissipating heat than sealed bearings.
The best option for a dirty or dusty environment is a sealed bearing because they are better at keeping out pollutants than shielded bearings.
